The English Singing Baker combines two of Lily's main passions - singing and baking.
Thought up during the 2012 run of the Happy Prince in Edinburgh, the idea came during a chat about Lily's love of baking at home while listening to and singing along to the soundtracks of her favourite musicals.
The English Singing Baker gives Lily the opportunity to sing her favourite songs and bake for others pleasure.
At the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and 2015, the English Singing Baker appeared in English Cabaret Hour at C South.
She stage baked two of her own recipes
- Mini Cupcakes and Cinderella Shortbread - with a selection of songs from standards to rediscovered favourites.
She was well received...
Moving on from the onstage persona at the Fringe, Lily decided to transfer her persona online, to YouTube, and make a series of videos entitled 'ESB Monthly Bake.' This gave Lily the opportunity to bake in a kitchen environment and focus on the music. During 2016, Lily played 50 songs accompanying herself on her trusty yellow ukulele and made a baker's dozen of new recipes.
She also created an ESB Monthly Bake calendar and plans to sell it with the recipes she created as part of this project.
From 2007 - 13 Lily sang with Southwark Cathedral Girls Choir under the direction of Stephen Disley. From 2009 she led the choir and highlights of her time there included singing choral evensong on BBC Radio 3 and Choral Eucharist broadcast live on BBC 1.
Since 2010, Lily has worked with English Cabaret on a range of projects. On stage she has appeared as Pandora in The Happy Prince at two Edinburgh Fringes 2012 and 2014 at C Venues - at the 10th International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival and at the Bridewell Theatre, London.
Alongside performing with English Caberet, she has taken part in her father's on-going projects about David Maxwell-Fyfe, her great grandfather. On the adventure, she took photographs for his film, Under an English Heaven and appeared as herself discovering the history of her great grandfather. Since 2013, she has sung in Dreams of Peace and Freedom, a songcycle telling his story in multiple venues around the UK including St Peter's Church, Edinburgh, St Matthews, Westminster and Mansfield College, Oxford. And abroad in Nuremberg as part of the 71st anniversary of the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials.
She is a keen self taught baker - baking at any available opportunity and watching the professionals at work and learning new techniques from Food TV.
'as charming as the cupcakes handed out to the audience members and a pleasant way to spend an hour on a drizzly Edinburgh day.'
'...it’s 21st Century savvy...performing her own bake-off, complete with cupcakes for the audience...'
She said 'Over the two years of English Cabaret Hour, I learnt a lot about baking in performance. I loved singing my choice of songs as well as baking however it more stressful on the production side that I expected. It was however fantastic to distribute cakes or biscuits to the audience and see the immediate reaction on their faces.'
Also during 2015, Lily began writing a recipe of the month under the ESB persona and wrote 12 of her favourite recipes up and posted them on lilyblackmore.co.uk.
